I've liked Welty's work in the past, and this is a good book. But I would leave like it at that even though it won the Pulitzer. It was the Judge's character and his recent actions (the young second wife) that I felt were not handled well enough. I can see many reasons why he may decided to just die, but none of them are "true" enough for me to buy into. But Welty knows how to write and the book is still worth considering (and greater minds than mine see more in this book).
